Beijing Car Visa: The Capital’s Invisible Border
The role of capital cities is crucial in many countries, but in nations with governance structures similar to China—where the Party plays a leading role and the political system closely resembles the Soviet model—the capital’s role becomes particularly significant.
While Russians joke about the “rubber city” of Moscow and its hyper-centralization, moving to or even driving to Moscow isn’t particularly problematic. You can drive into Moscow with regional license plates without major issues.
Beijing is a completely different story.
The Beijing Hukou Dream
Obtaining Beijing household registration (北京户口) is an impossible dream for hundreds of millions of Chinese people. Buying a car in Beijing is also extremely challenging. But what makes Beijing truly unique is its physical border.
Yes, if you want to drive into Beijing, you’ll encounter what amounts to a border control. They’ll ask you (thoroughly, especially if you’re a foreigner) why you’re here and for how long. After all the procedures, you receive a car visa that allows you to drive in Beijing (excluding the most central areas) for 7 days.
If you don’t leave within 7 days, you’ll face fines and serious problems.
Transportation Controls
For other types of transport, there are generally no problems, but security is significantly heightened, especially during state events and crisis situations (like COVID-19).
I could talk about Beijing’s unique characteristics for a long time. Stay tuned! 一会儿见!
P.S. The photo shows an actual Beijing car visa permit.
